          away for a few days, it was perhaps the first time the staff was on their own. Three nights making and eating amazing meals. A huge copper kettle to heat water and a borrowed swissgold filter. This week we entertain new coffee samples (of prospective offerings), add a few more barhooks, and continue to search for the perfect bathroom mirror. Also the afternoon “little buddy”, a drink we make (seemingly fitting for afternoons) is really starting to grow on us.

          the Little Buddy is slang for short americano. Often at our bar it refers to one cup in particular (thats right- one single vessel). The stock bar cups each come in sets of 36, however Gretchen made each cup uniquely different. There are actually a few cups we feel comfortable serving as little Buddys, but there is one we will most definitely serve unless its already out, or buried under a mound of dirty dishes. The origin of the term Little Buddy is vague, but may be traced through the Little Red Bike Cafe, where one sometimes heard it ordered.

          Courier’s cellar is down to Ethiopia Biloya Coffee and El Salvador finca San Luis. The washed out colors of the first photo remind me of what its like to start at 2am everyday. Friday we got purse hooks at Rejuvination (for under the bar). Edwins bike frames are still hung on the wall, along with North St.’s pannier/backpacks. Rumor is there will be a closing party/reception at our bar for the months art, tba. Currently we are scouting for a bigger mirror for our bathroom.

          Saturdays hours have been a hit. The best part of Saturday is serving customers directly out of our oven. Folks will come and wait for the Zucchini bread (vegan), buttermilk scones w heaps of fresh peaches baked on top, and savory tarts. The weekend is very different, since we continue to bake at open-after 10am. Friends come and knock on the door a little earlier, seeing our bikes outside.

          Leala, our food creative and beloved baker, is setting up a test kitchen in her apartment now. The last month at Little T American Baker has her wanting to work large amounts of pastry, which she is loving there. To put more passion into what she loves (creating) she will now be doing her food dreaming from her kitchen and at Little T. Although we are going to miss her, she is still family, and will still be there when we need her help. The last few months we have actually been baking off what Leala has prepped, and working side by side with her in the wee hours of the morning. Her?recipes will still be with us, and we expect to be eating a fair amount of her test baking from home. xox

          It feels like we all went to the river this weekend (or was it this summer). This saturday peaches, basil, cherry tomatoes, zucchini were some of the items we got at the Farmers Market. Tarts have been selling out- Cherry Tomatoes, Fresh Basil, Chevre, in a cornmeal crust w an egg and a pinch of fleur de sel. Oh and we have Zucchini Bread for days (semolina, blackberry, lemon zest). Our new coffee from the Biloya cooperative (Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia) appears to be our number one seller at the bar). Hopefully everyone had a beautiful weekend. We think the Courier staff really enjoyed the extra day off.
