          New bicycle pedals have arrived, to more safely distribute coffee. Funn pedals, with hollow tip studs and grip tape centers, courtesy of Veloshop.

          Monday new coffee starts working its way by truck to us, so they say. Pretty much all next week will be dicey as we must ensure that someone is here to accept delivery. If it rains then that person must move coffee very quickly to the cellar. We have two separate semi-truck deliveries to intercept throughout next week.

          Produce Row Cafe has closed for remodel. Joseph Ahearne, Ahearne Cycles, loaned us a CycleTruck to try for the week, rad. Our beloved Half & Half Cafe, 923 SW Oak, is closing May 1st. Half & Half was the first cafe to serve Courier, and one of the first to serve Stumptown. Courier Coffee will be moving into the H&H space, and opening, while still roasting and distributing from 40th and Hawthorne.

          We also have a new account serving Courier at Killingsworth and Vancouver, Tuff Luck, inside In Other Words. They do a modest espresso service and French press to order.

          Turns out the Costa Rica makes for thin espresso, but pretty awesome in milk drinks. Almost as soon as we discovered this, we started sending out our winner- Brazil Cerrado (region) de Minas (Minas Gerias is a state) fazenda (farm) Serra Negra (farm name). Thats: Brazil Cerrado de Minas fazenda Serra Negra, and the farm is run by Pedro Luis Rossi. He was actually here, yesterday, at our workshop. We told him how lovely his coffee was. We pulled him a double espresso of His coffee roasted nine hours prior. Then we proceeded to siphon coffee of the same lot roasted a different way. If anyone wondered why we were so late yesterday, it was because three farmers showed up, unannounced, at our workshop.

          If anyone remembers our summer run, of Brazil Cerrado de Minas fazenda Chapadao de Ferro, well, Ruvaldo Delarisse was here yesterday too. Yesterday was kind of exciting. That coffee had much minerally salt. Chapadao de Ferro in Portugese means, really big plateau of iron. Take that to mean extinct volcano.

          The faz. Serra Negra, lot #811 is a true natural process coffee, meaning the cherry dried on the seeds. This is why the coffee is so sweet, much of the fruit sugars soaked into the seed, in the process of drying. We had thought the coffee was 100% red Catuai varietal, but we learned Mundo Novo varietal is also included. The farm size is 90 Hectares (Ha), pretty big, and they also grow yellow Catuai.

          We were sleeping on the Serra Negra, and now you have it for espresso. At this point it has been biked to the four corners of Portland. We thought the Costa Rica was fun, but perhaps not so fun for the straight espresso drinkers.

          Much happening in our coffee world. Dinner with friends. Courier is going to get a whole lot more exciting soon. One tidbit: we have a new Ahearne bike coming our way for trials this weekend, a cycle truck. Check it out.

          Biking double trips the last two weeks has kept us hungry. Deliver coffee to everyone Friday, then within the next 24 hours they call for more. Perierra Creperie (12th and Hawthorne), one of our loving accounts, keeping us fed.

          John of PICNIC fame (soon to be foodcart), and already spotted in 2009 serving up delicious housemade food/drink, saved Courier Coffee this weekend by taking its Cargo Bike to Eugene. The cargo bike got washed before it took its bike journey to Johns house, frame slung over the shoulder, wheels and seatpost removed.

          Then, CAT (Center for Appropriate Transport), or really a part of CAT- Human Powered Machines (HPM) gave our bike a thicker steel cross piece. Tyler did the welding, and Jan gave John a tour of CAT. The steel certainly is thicker. Extras came in the form of bumpers for the kickstand, hooks to better strap loads, and new heim joints for the steering linkage. Huge thanks to CAT and HPM for covering our bike, and keeping Courier Coffee biking big loads.

          Cargo bike cross piece, that holds aluminum diamond plate cargo bed portion of the bike, has broken. You may notice an absence of this bicycle in the coming weeks.

          As a business that wholesales coffee (that we roast) and does all delivery by bike, this is certainly a blow for us. Basically this pairs down to a lot more biking. We now have twenty two accounts spread across Portland. The farthest distance between accounts is ten miles. Besides PorQueNo on Hawthorne our next closest commercial account is over a mile away. We bike to Little Red Bike Cafe in N. Portland minimally two times a week, but more often three. We love the bike. Hopefully the Center for Appropriate Transport in Eugene (CAT) gets us running heavy loads soon. If anyone would help get our frame back to Eugene for its repair please let us know.           4019 SE Hawthorne, behind the house, our workshop location. I guess you could say we accept will call pick ups, and special orders.

          A recent awesome day was doing sheetrock. Matt picked up material on our cargo bike, which also doubled as a workbench and sawhorse. We made coffee and decanted it into pretty enameled cups.


          We actually store our coffee below the house, but contrary to popular belief do not live here. A couple of real nice kids just moved in. We have a wine de-humidifier running in the basement that works alright. The green coffee is kept on palettes evenly spaced. Our store room is a positive pressure system, meaning air pushes out.

          Mostly we are showing you pictures of us working on sheetrock with our bicycle because it looks pretty. I guess coffee delivery is pretty too. This day was pretty satisfying.

          The cargo bike has been selectively shifting for weeks. Cable at the trigger untwisted, causing shifting failure. New cable from Veloshop, Alex fixed that yesterday. Now it shifts like butter (phil wood hub, shimano deore derailler, housing well lubricated). The front steering linkage remains poor, since our red loctite failed. The next step is two nuts to tighten against each other with loctite to hold the bolt (another visit to General Threaded, Portlands dedicated? retail location for all threaded nuts and bolts).

          Courier Coffee has decided to take on bike expenses such as tires and brake pads for all of its employees. Combine that with health care being provided and one wonders how we may pull it off.

          The workshop has been remarkably clean and orderly these past days. We are reviewing our last year of work/coffee/biking. Monthly safety meetings are now being held, including- get this- fire drills!!

          Still remaining the same it feels like we are getting better, more streamlined, more efficient, more focused on coffee.

          Currently it is pouring. Alex is downtown riding the cargo bike around. Fresh Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee from the Oromia cooperative, roasted this morning, wrapped with red ribbon, at the Eyeful gallery (9th and Everette). The Dill Pickle Club has set up a gift shop where there are folk/blues records, Sprockette t-shirts, and some cool books on subjects like the history of Portland’s Chinatown.

          Alex is also dropping fresh coffee at the Half and Half Cafe, 923 SW Oak. Indonesia Flores Bajawa Ngura, and Oromia cooperative Yirgacheffe. Half and Half Cafe is traditionally where we do our Christmas shopping. Definitely before they even started selling our coffee our friends got Half & Half t-shirts, and later, beer cozies. There was even a time they had Half & Half underwear. They have shirts in six different colors. They also have stocking stuffers located below the register, and this year a load of tapes from Eggy Records.

          This year we are ordering a ton of jam made by Little Red Bike Cafe. Check out their blog with mouthwatering pictures of their other food, and maybe some pictures of jam. Perhaps a nice gift for people who love food.

          We also want to get T-shirts for our family from DoveVivi. It has been a week or two since we have eaten there, which we figure is alright since we sport their shirts pretty much non-stop.

          Now, on the flip side of this, my father loves shopping for me at Veloshop, a bike shop around the corner from Half & Half Cafe. A few people have commented on the bike helmet my dad got me from there for my birthday. It is a Uvex helmet, nice.

          And last- Hall Tool. They keep the Knipex tools behind the counter. We also like the Wiha screw drivers, and the Bondhaus allen wrenches. This is one of the many places we frequent in the East side industrial area. They are right across the street from Goodwill.

          Seriously- this is where we get our gifts. The photo up-top was taken this morning. A bunch of freight had to be moved 5 miles along our delivery route. In those boxes are a bunch of glass, a Bunn coffee grinder, and a 5 gallon water tower.

          Last night the streets were sparkling with ice. We have between our front loading cargo bike and my Surly 1×1 one set of Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires, with carbide studs. These offer a lot of rolling resistance, perfect for these icy mornings. Matt and Alex’s bikes run 27inch tires, which unfortunately do not have their own set of studded tires.

          We have been tying some of the coffee that goes out with red ribbon. Below is our current offering list. A few coffees are roasted each day as part of 15 pound batches, often we have something roasted here fresh.

          Kenya Karatina aa (Nyeri)- spicy, rasberry citrus.

          Guatemala finca las Nubes- tobleron chocolate orange

          El Salvador finca Alaska- tangerine, kumquat, super juicy and very full sugar

          Ethiopia Yirgacheffe grade 2 Oromia cooperative, organically grown- rad.

          Indonesia Flores Bajawa Ngura (wet hulled)- peanut buttery, organic grown.

          Tuesday we expect two more coffees to arrive and be added to our list. If you would like coffee please just call our number listed on our main page.

          Currently we have a nice rotation of coffee going at Half and Half Cafe and Little Red Bike Cafe. Our goal is to always have three different coffees at each. Our espresso is on the way out. Our 100% red bourbon varietal espresso from the Alvarez family, el Salvador, looks like it may be gone by either Christmas or the New Year. We are super in love with this espresso at the moment. Please check it out before it is gone.
